Executive Order 14275 - “Restoring Common Sense to Federal Procurement.” On April 15, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14275, “Restoring Common Sense to Federal Procurement,” launching a broad review of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). Over time, the FAR has grown into a 2,000-page framework that many view as overly complex and burdensome—slowing down the acquisition process and making it harder for small vendors to compete. The order tasks the Office of Federal Procurement Policy (OFPP), working with the Federal Acquisition Regulatory Council, with identifying outdated or unnecessary rules and proposing streamlined updates within 180 days. The overarching goal is to reduce red tape, improve efficiency, and help agencies procure goods and services more quickly and effectively, particularly for high-impact or time-sensitive needs. This initiative has some implications for the government property management community. Since property oversight is so closely tied to procurement, a more efficient acquisition process could directly improve how federal assets—like equipment, real estate, and other property—are acquired, tracked, and managed. Streamlined rules could mean fewer administrative bottlenecks, clearer compliance standards for contractors managing government-furnished property, and better alignment between procurement and property functions. While the full scope of the changes will roll out over time, this executive order potentially represents a meaningful step toward modernizing the systems that support federal property and acquisition across the board.
