Announcing the 2017 President’s Award Recipient

During the 2017 NES in Phoenix, Arizona, the 2017 President’s Award was presented to Dr. Douglas Goetz, CPPM, CF.

Dr. Goetz has been a member of NPMA for over 30 years and is a great example of someone who loves the NPMA as well as the asset management/property profession. He has served as National Editor and now Editor Emeritus of the Property Professional, as well as multiple terms as a member of the NPMA Board of Advisors. He has published numerous articles for The Property Professional. Doug is an accomplished educator, dynamic speaker, researcher and author whose reputation precedes him as a now retired professor at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and the Defense Acquisition University (DAU). This past year Doug was recently re-elected as VP of Parliamentary Procedure. Some of his accomplishments thus far:

• Along with Ivonne Bachar, VP of Membership, Doug was tasked to coordinate the rewrite of the Operations Manual for the NPMA – the manual was approved by the board, May 2017.
• Doug’s endeavors have brought a program with an accredited university, State University of New York, SUNY, to and earn a certificate from Herkimer in Quality Assurance – Property and Asset Management approved July 3, 2017!

Thank you, Doug, for your commitment and his overriding dedication to NPMA.

NPMA Fall Education Seminar Confirms General Session Speaker, Mike Hay

Register for the Fall Education Seminar November 15-16, 2017 in Austin, Texas and benefit from a wealth of knowledge from professionals in Contract Property, University/Medical, and State & Local Government including General Session speaker, Mike Hay.

Mike Hay is the CEO of Strategic Risk Consulting, LLC. His broad professional background in financial management and risk management, teamed with is experience in using information technology to achieve critical business objectives, allows him to assist his public and private sector clients in planning and addressing their risks at the enterprise and strategic levels.

Mike’s prior professional experience includes positions as Director of Risk Management Programs for The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research as well as Director of Information Resources and Risk Assessment/Loss Prevention for the Texas State Office of Risk Management. Mike also has extensive public sector experience with the Texas State Comptroller’s Office and as Assistant Superintendent for several school districts.

Mike has led in the development of several large-scale information technology and risk management projects including the Texas State Property Accounting System, Texas Budget Execution and Monitoring System and the Texas Risk Evaluation and Planning System. Mike is a past president of the National Property Management Association (NPMA) and is an author of NPMA’s “The Standard Property Book – Asset Management for the New Millennium” and is an author of “Essentials of Risk Management” published by The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.

Mike is a national faculty member for The National Alliance’s Certified Risk Manager Program and also serves on the faculty for the Certified School Risk Manager and Certified Insurance Service Representative programs. In addition to his risk management consulting services, Mike teaches and lectures throughout the nation on topics related to risk and property management and continues to write numerous articles for national and international publications.

We are “Kickin’ it up in Austin!” Special Grants Have Been Approved for the Fall Education Seminar

The Executive Board has approved limited additional grant funding for the FES in Austin. Even if you have reached your lifetime limit, or may not meet the criteria for a typical Foundation grant, we are accepting applications from all NPMA members. First come – First served! Applications must be submitted by September 16th. You could be “kickin’ it up in Austin” along with us! 

The 2017 Fall Education Seminar (FES) is scheduled November 15-16 in Austin, Texas.

NPMA Call for Candidates!
Election for NPMA Regional and National Officers
Term begins in 2018 and ends 2020

The NPMA Bylaws state, in Article VIII, Section 1 (A) that the chair of the Nominating Committee will submit a complete slate of proposed officers to the National President not later than 90 days prior to the annual meeting.

To meet this deadline, candidates will be accepted for inclusion on the slate until Friday, May 4, 2018. Candidates may be nominated from the floor but will not be included on the official slate presented to the National President.

Traditionally, the names, photos, and bios of the candidates have been presented in an issue of The Property Professional magazine. This tradition will continue and to be included in the magazine, a candidate must submit materials by Monday, December 4, 2017. Information received after Monday, December 4, 2017 will not appear in the magazine.

In addition, candidates’ information including material received by March 2018 will be placed on the NPMA website.

The Journal of Property and Asset Management

NPMA presents the fourth edition of the Journal of Property and Asset Management (JPAM). JPAM is a prestigious electronic journal published by NPMA that features high quality academic research based articles. This issue of the JPAM presents to our profession three wonderful articles:

- Steve Holland presents a discussion of “Federal Property Accountability of Live Animals Used for Agency Missions” -- an area that most of us give short shrift to – but after a close reading will garner some new found attention.

- Amber Propert does a detailed analysis of the Contract Line Item Structure – another topic that we pay little attention to until it is desperately needed to solve some contractual issues related to Government property.

- And lastly, Kelly Marchese, Barbara Rosenbaum and Yvan Caceres provide us an article on Medical Warehousing Risk Management developed by the Hospitals and Medical Facilities SIG. A new topic for many of us!
