James Sherlock- 2016 Rookie of the Year

What does this award mean to you?

This award means a lot to me. It shows that my peers and co-workers recognize and appreciate the work that I do on a daily basis.

What drives you to commit your time to NPMA?

When I started in property management two years ago, I had many people express to me what a valuable resource the NPMA is for networking and learning and, that if I want to grow in this field I need to become a vital member. That’s why I decided to volunteer to become a chapter officer.

What has NPMA done for your career?

The NPMA has allowed for me to grow quickly in my career. Since the property function can be somewhat “contained” within large companies, participating in an industry association as robust as the NPMA has aided tremendously in networking, supplemental training and a foundational knowledge in building my career.

What advice for success would you give to someone new in asset management?

To take in and learn as much as you can. There are so many different nuances and moving parts in the asset management profession that it takes a few years just to become familiar with all the different rules and regulations involved.
