Advance the profession of Asset Management through leadership in education, standards, compliance, and certifications.

Meet Tara Miller, CPPM, CF - 2016 Property person of the Year

What does this award mean to you?

I am unbelievably honored to have achieved this award. I have always enjoyed my work in Asset Management and the challenges it brings. I am more than flattered to be among this elite group of experts in the Asset Management field. Although I have always strived to learn and expand my knowledge, I never thought I would be standing among people that I have considered to be my mentors over the years.

What drives you to commit your time to NPMA?

The NPMA has done so much for my career, I feel it is necessary to give back. I started out in Property and through networking and the many educational moments the NPMA provides, I was able to grow and expand my career. My knowledge of logistics, finance and contracts, as well as Asset Management, was gained through involvement with the NPMA. I am now the Program Manager of the KISS III (KSC Institutional Support Services) contract at KSC. In this role, I manage a $48 million prime contract with NASA. The knowledge I gained through NPMA training provided the background for this position. In addition, I enjoy the fellowship, the networking, the continuous learning and the challenges that come from working in the Property field and the NPMA.

What has NPMA done for your career?

Joining the NPMA was the moment I went from having a “job” to having a career. Through the NPMA, I was able to understand the importance of the work I was performing and how it affected the success of our contract and business. Utilizing what I learned through the NPMA, I was able to provide solutions and alternatives that supported NASA’s requirements when working on the International Space Station and supporting the bi-lateral agreements with our International Partners.

What advice for success would you give to someone new in asset management?

Learn all you can to continuously expand your knowledge. Asset Management is an ever changing world and it is important to stay on top of the regulations, to thoroughly understand them and how they apply to your work. Once you have this understanding, you will be able to recommend solutions instead of saying “No, the regulations don’t allow for that”. You will become the “go to" person, making you Subject Matter Expert which may lead to additional opportunities.
