Meet Billie Jo Perchla, CPPM, CF
2016 Recipient of the
Carl Iannacone Tribute Award
What does this award mean to you?
Of course it is gratifying to receive an award for doing things that give me great pleasure in the first place.
What drives you to commit your time to NPMA?
I am retired, and as such, I have more time than anything else. Giving back to NPMA for all that its done for me is a pleasure. As long as the NPMA finds value in what I do, I will continue to give my time and effort.
What has NPMA done for your career?
Absolutely EVERYTHING! I started as an GS-5 property clerk and was sent to AFIT for my first property class. That class was taught by Col. Morris and his brand new colleague, Doug Goetz...my first property class was Doug's first class at AFIT. I not only had my first taste of asset management but I also learned that there was an organization that supported those people that worked in the field. When I returned I located my local chapter (Bay Area) and joined. I took every class the NPMA offered, I listened and learned from my colleagues both at my local chapter (Ivonne Bachar, Andy Anderson, Richard Olsen, etc.) and at NPMA sponsored events/classes (Ed Winters, Doug of course, Mel Whaley, etc.). I went from a GS-5 Property Clerk to a GS-12 Property Chief responsible for $1.242B of Government property in 5 years...because of what I learned from the NPMA and its members.
What advice for success would you give to someone new in asset management?
Join the NPMA and then "stop, look, and listen" to what the organization and its members have to tell you! NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK!
